Tom was a
third generation San Franciscan. He was happiest when he was out of doors,
especially in the Sierra Nevada. Early in his life he developed a keen interest
in Geology and began collecting stones. Although he traveled extensively
to collect indigenous materials, his favorite sight was Jade Cove, California.
He became a member of the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society almost
at its inception. Quickly becoming active in the society, he soon learned
the art of commesso (intarsia). He became a highly respected teacher who
shared all of his knowledge and experience. His work reflects his ability
to incorporate natural materials as part of the entire design. He has received
numerous awards and recognition for his work in the Fine Art of Commesso
di pietre dure e tenere. He passed away several years ago and his contributions
to society are sorely missed.
