John Kurgan

   John Kurgan was born on July 29, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He went to Morgan Park High School and then to work for the Chicago Service Lines (later the Chicago Transit Authority). During a stint in the U.S. Army in the late 1940's, he met Grace Rubey. They were married in 1950. After the army he returned to work for Chicago Service Lines. He joined the Chicago Lapidary Club in 1957. He made his Florentine Mosaic (intarsia) map of the United States around that time.

   After he retired in 1985, John and Grace moved to Dewey, Arizona. They joined the Yavapai Rock Hounds and made silver jewelry cabochons, polished specimens, and bookends. They continue to produce and exhibit their artwork in gem shows.
