Eugene Maxwell

   Eugene was born on May 12, 1913. He had a varied career, spending several years at sea in the Navy and Merchant Marine including three years in the Orient. During World War II, he built ships at the Union Ironworks in San Francisco and the famous Kaiser #1 Shipyard in Richmond, California. He also worked at the Everett Shipyard in Washington. After the war, he entered the building trades.

   When he retired, he began to work with rocks. After seeing the "Chinese Years" group project by the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society on the cover of Gems & Minerals, he made his first commesso (intarsia). He continued making these pictures for over 20 years and has become one of the most prolific artists in America.
