Dr. Earl Donaldson

Earl was born on August 26, 1917 in a small town in Colorado (so small he suggests even the modest population figures it claimed included cattle). He attended grade school and high school in Haxtun, where he played football and basketball. He was also elected student body president. After graduation, he enrolled in the University of Colorado, taking a Pre-Med schedule. He was a member and officer of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and participated in fraternity athletics. It was here in Boulder that he met Hilda.
He decided on dentistry as a profession, and since Colorado had no Dental School, he went to the University of Nebraska Dental School in Lincoln. When his family moved to California in 1939, he transferred to USC. In the final semester, Pearl Harbor drastically changed his plans. Earl was inducted into the Army as a 2nd Lt. He continued his education and in 1943 received his DDS. He and Hilda were married the day after he took the State Board Exams. After serving in the Army Dental Corps and achieving the rank of major, he specialized in orthodontics.

He set up his dental practice in Long Beach, California and soon had a daughter, Diane, and a son, Dean. He became active in several major professional organizations and started the first orthodontic study club and the local Assistance League's orthodontic clinic in Long Beach, which offered no cost services to the poor.
In 1980 he retired and moved to Leisure World, where he continued to give back to the community by involvement in several clubs and charitable activities. He somehow found the time to produce several commessi (intarsias), most of which he gave away.
