Cecil Martin

Cecil Martin and family started rock hunting in 1956. When he began working with rocks, he used all homemade equipment. He went to the Minnesota State Fair in 1963. There he saw some commessi (intarsias) made by Charles Smart, and was so interested in them he started to make some himself. He exhibited his first two, a pair of mallard ducks, at the first State Gem & Mineral Fair in Denver in 1968. He won the best in show ribbon for his magnificent artwork.

. . . . . . .

He is still making commessi, but it has gotten harder to find the material that he likes to use. He has also done free forms, spheres, gem sculpture, and silver jewelry.

. . . . . . .

This is an art form that both he and his wife Dolores enjoy all year.
