In 1959, the Arlington Gem & Mineral Club members decided to construct a map of the USA with each state made of a native state rock. Alice Buharin was chosen chairman of this project. Alice did such a super job that the map was ready for the 1960 Federation Show in Arlington, Texas.
Alice contacted a rock club or rock shop in each of the fifty states with great response. She purchased a children's jigsaw puzzle map of the United States. As the rock specimens came in, they were matched with the state from the puzzle. Each piece was given to a member to shape and polish. Ten members of the club were responsible for the making of all the 50 states.
As each rock arrived, the donor was sent a thank-you note and at the end of the project each donor also received a picture of the map.
A few states did not respond, but someone always came up with a rock from that state so that the map was completely authentic when finished.

The artists who created this map were:

Jule & Marge Krampe
George Herret
Jimmie & Mary Hooper
