Alice & Franz Roth

   Alice was born in Hollywood, California on January 24, 1909. Her family moved to Florida where as a child she contracted malaria and they moved to the Bronx in New York City. There she was graduated from High School and then in 1925 entered the Northfield School for Girls in Massachusetts. She moved back to the Bronx and went to work in the offices of Met Life and W.T. Grant. In 1935 she moved to Mt Kisco, New York where met and married Franz Roth. They had three children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. They lived in Mt. Kisco until 1966 when they moved to San Francisco, California. She started in lapidary in 1968 and joined the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society. She began making commessi (intarsias) in 1970.

   Franz was born in Manhattan, New York City on October 22, 1907. After he finished High School he moved to Mt. Kisco, New York where he worked as a carpenter and a house painter. He started lapidary together with Alice after they moved to California. He was in charge of maintaining the shop's equipment and taught all forms of the lapidary arts while a member of the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society. He passed away on February 15, 1999.
